Composition: Titanium oxide
Nomenclature: Named after the Latin word "rutilus," which means "reddish," a reference to the mineral's color.
Industrial Uses: Ore of titanium.
Additional Notes: Rutile is a polymorph with two other minerals, anatase and brookite. Polymorphs (a term that means "multiple forms") are minerals that have the same chemical composition--titanium oxide in the case of anatase, brookite, and rutile--but have different crystallographic structures.
