Mineral Name: Monazite

Composition: Cerium lanthanum thorium neodymium yttrium phosphate

Nomenclature: Named from the Greek word "monazeis," which means "to be alone" in reference to its isolated crystals.

Industrial Uses: Ore of cerium, thorium, and lanthanum.

Additional Notes: Monazite is radioactive and has been used in radioactive dating techniques. Monazite is a relatively hard, dense mineral which survives weathering. As a result, monazite grains are a frequent constituent of beach sands.
