Composition: Sodium chloride

Nomenclature: Named after the Greek word "hals" which means "salt" because of its composition.

Industrial Uses: Table salt, rock salt.

Additional Notes: One of the few minerals that provides benefit by direct human consumption. Halite, when placed in contact with ice, lowers the ice's melting point. This property is exploited in colder climates to melt ice from streets.
